About Us

In the summer of 1992, nine of us, who had all graduated from the Darul-Uloom (Islamic university) situated at Ramsbottom in Bury, Greater Manchester, formed an organization by the name of UNITY.

Our first & foremost project was the launch of a 4-sided family magazine by the name of `UNITY` (Al-Ittihaad). The first issue was presented to the people in September 1992 (1000 copies).

In 1993, the plight of the Muslims of Albania was brought to our attention by a few people who had visited that country, this led us to send 3 representatives to carry out an initial research.

In response to their assessment of the needs of Albanian Muslims, we decided to implement short-term & long-term welfare, relief & educational projects in Albania.

One other area of great concern that came to our knowledge was the need of Muslim foster carers & adopters. Due to a shortage, Muslim children had either been placed with non-Muslim carers or in children’s homes which we felt was not the right environment or surrounding for a Muslim child. We started to liase with the appropriate departments & agencies in trying to address this need of Muslim children in care.

As the organization was progressing & the projects increasing, it was necessary to have our own premises which could be utilized for accommodating Muslim children in care if the need arose & also to have an office from where the projects of the organization could be implemented from.

With this in mind, a large property was purchased in 1996 and at the same time we decided to change the name of the organization to Muslim Welfare Institute. The name of the magazine was to be kept the same. The organization was also registered with the Charity commission of England & Wales under registration number 1066665.

In March 2003, 2 representatives carried out an initial assessment of the conditions of the Muslims in India. This was to become our second country of work where long term & short term projects would be initiated.

In December 2003, 2 representatives visited Bangladesh and this was added on as our third country of work.

In a nutshell, the M.W.I. is actively working on the ground in Albania, Bangladesh & India.

Besides the above 3 countries, representatives of the M.W.I. have personally visited Kosovo, Indonesia & Sri Lanka. Furthermore, in partnership with other charities, the M.W.I. has provided financial support for projects in areas affected by the 2004 Tsunami, in areas affected by the 2005 South Asia Earthquake, as well as financial assistance for the Muslims of Lebanon, Palestine & Malawi.
